The wolf came up the stairwell of Harrow Court the winter the lift broke, and nobody on the fourteenth floor thought to ask where it had come from. Mrs Dunmore found it first, sitting on the landing with its back to the damp wall, its grey coat thick with frost, looking up at the strip light as if it were the moon.

The old people on the estate said wolves kept to the woods past the ring road, but Mrs Dunmore had lived through three councils and two floods and knew a creature that had decided to stay. She left it the heel of her bread and a saucer of milk. Each morning the saucer was empty and the wolf was nearer the door, until one day it was sitting in the car park below her window, head tipped back, and the wind pulled the ash from the bins into a rough circle of petals at its feet.

The council sent a man with a van to clear the bins. He saw the wolf, and the flowers the boys had planted in old tyres along the kerb, and he stood a long while with his clipboard. Then he wrote nothing down and drove away.

Mrs Dunmore kept the saucer out until spring. When the lilac came up through the cracked tarmac, the wolf was gone, and she told her grandchildren it had only gone up to the top floor to look at the weather.
