Purple watercolour-style owl face tattoo with yellow eyes and sketchy black linework, placed on the upper back near the shoulder blade.

Owl face tattoo on upper back

Back · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo shows a stylised owl face with two large yellow-ringed eyes, set within soft purple wash shading that fades into grey and black at the base. Thin, sketchy black lines form the outline and branch-like strokes on either side, with drips extending downward. The owl is centred on the upper back, with the shoulder visible to the right and a pale marble wall behind.

The last train through Haddow Junction was due at twenty to eleven, and Ruth Caddick had already put her coat on twice. The box would close at midnight, the lever frame would be pulled for the final time, and the men from the council would come with their clipboards in the morning. She still had the logbook to finish. Outside, the signal gantry hummed in the wind, and the owl was sitting on the top arm again, as it had every night since March.

Nobody else had seen it properly. Gerald from the parcels office said it was a tawny and a bit of a show-off, and Ruth had let him think so. But she knew the way it watched the down line, the way its head swung round as if following something only it could see across the rails. Its eyes caught the lamp light and burned a clean gold, while the rest of it bled into the dusk like wine spilled on a tablecloth.

At ten to eleven the bell rang and the signal dropped. Ruth pulled the lever, and the owl lifted, not in alarm but unhurried, and flew low along the platform. It landed on the waiting room roof above a boy with a cardboard suitcase tied shut with string. He had not been there a minute before. He looked up, the owl looked down, and then the train was in with brakes shrieking. By the time the doors hissed open the platform was empty except for a single white feather lying on the bench.

Ruth logged the train as on time. Then, because nobody would ever check, she wrote a name in the margin, the one the boy had said to the owl as though it might be a friend: Tobias Lane, aged nine, bound for Crewe. She left the lamp burning in the box when she locked up, and when she looked back from the car park the owl was sitting on the arm again, watching the line for whoever came next.
