Fox head with geometric ornament on back
Neo-trad · Back · Mixed · Photo
A fox face is centred on the upper back, with pointed ears, a black nose and pale eyes framed by ornamental patterns. The linework is fine and detailed, with heavy black shading on the ears and muzzle and patterned fills in orange, red, cream and gold. Layered triangles and a diamond motif sit beneath the head, and the design is framed by the person's shoulders and tied-back hair.

Sit down, the lot of you. The bread's not going anywhere and neither am I, though my knees would argue. You want the fox? Then hush, because the fox never liked a crowd.

Mind the old mill road above Carrick, where the hedges grow so tall the sky comes down to meet them. Ysolde Marr was getting married there, and she had promised the whole valley a three-tier cake, which was two tiers more than her purse could bear. The fox came to the gate on the wedding morning with a white thread in its teeth and a look in its eyes like a horse dealer's. It wanted three things, it said: the first slice, the last dance, and the name of the groom's grandmother's grave.
Her father laughed and said no. The fox only tapped its nose with one paw and walked off along the wall. Where its feet touched the moss, the moss turned to cold gold, then to little triangles, one set inside another, like tiers of a cake that had never been baked. Ysolde followed it, because she had never once in her life let a fox have the last word.
It led her to the middle of the old quarry, where the water sat black and still. It said, look down. In the water a face looked back up at her: cream muzzle, sharp black nose, two pale eyes. The fox asked her, very politely, which of the two she meant to marry, the man waiting in the church or the woman who had been standing at the gate all her life.
She walked back up the road without answering. Some say the cake was never cut. Some say the fox ate it. I say the last dance was the best of all, and that fox has never once paid for a drink.
