The lamp had gone out twice that week, and the village blamed the miller's boy, though everyone knew he could not climb the chapel steps without his knees giving way. Maud Ferrier took the tinderbox from the nail by the door and went up herself, ivy brushing her shoulders as she passed the old wall where the leaves had swallowed the carved lintel.

At the top the eye was waiting, painted in the gable above the altar inside its triangle of gold leaf, and it regarded her the way the parish clerk regarded a late tithe, counting without malice. Maud knelt, cupped her palm and struck the flint until one coal caught in the tinder. She carried it back down in her closed hand, as her grandmother had taught her, so the light showed between her fingers like a thread of red wool.

Halfway down she felt the heat climb into her wrist and remembered the miller's boy asking her last month what the eye was for. She had told him it was for seeing what the lamp could not. He had laughed. Now she wondered whether the eye had been watching her or the coal, and whether a flame carried in a closed hand was a gift or a debt.

At the bottom the village waited in the lane with buckets and no complaints. Maud opened her fingers over the lamp in the square, the coal leapt into the wick, and the whole lane came up gold. Somebody cheered. She did not. She looked back at the chapel, where the eye would be watching the square now, and understood that it had never been looking for trouble. It had only been looking for someone willing to carry the light down.
