Woman embracing a skeleton with a rose
Traditional · Calf · Mixed · Photo
A woman with dark hair and red-flushed cheeks leans into a skeleton, her arms wrapped around its skull, while the skeleton's hand holds a red rose with dark green leaves. The design uses bold black outlines, solid black hair and grey shading on the skeleton's ribs and bones. Red and green accents sit against black and grey, and the figures fill the centre of the frame on smooth, lightly freckled skin.

The snow had closed the pass by noon, and Maud Harrow, who kept the Crow and Lantern at the top of the valley, counted her candles and found enough for a fortnight if nobody sat up late. The stranger came in as the bell over the door was still swinging from the wind. He was tall and bare-boned, and he carried a single red rose wrapped in brown paper, its stem already bent with cold.

He asked for a room and paid in old coins with no faces on them. Maud gave him the room over the kitchen, where the chimney kept the wall warm. Her daughter Ellen, who was eleven and fearless, sat on the stairs each evening to ask him questions, and he answered them all in a voice like a door on a rusted hinge. He never ate. He never asked for the fire to be built higher. Each night he set the rose on the windowsill, and each morning it had opened a little more.
By February the drifts had buried the lower windows, and Ellen had a fever that would not break. Maud sat by the bed and wept. The stranger came down the stairs at midnight and stood in the doorway with the lamp behind him. He said he could draw the cold out of the child if someone held her until morning. Maud said no. Then Ellen opened her eyes and asked him to stay, and Maud, who had already buried a husband under the drift, let go of her.
The fever broke by dawn. Ellen sat up, pink-cheeked and cross about her porridge. The room over the kitchen was empty, the blanket folded tight. On the windowsill lay the rose, fully open, its petals dark as a bruise on a clean sheet. The thaw came three days later and the pass cleared, and nobody on the road ever saw the stranger again. Maud kept the rose in a jar on the sill for the rest of her life, and it never dropped a petal.
