Neo-trad · Other · Mixed · Photo
A woman with dark hair and a wide-brimmed black hat is shown in a head and shoulders portrait, holding an open orange book with the words Recently Deceased on its cover. Bold black outlines and soft grey shading define the figure, while the hat and hair are rendered in solid black. Blue crystal shapes sit at the left edge and the composition is cropped close to the limb.

Dennis came up the stairs at dusk with rain on his shoulders, though he had been dead since the Tuesday bus and rain should not have been able to touch him. Marjorie put the kettle on anyway. The kettle was the one thing in the building that never asked questions, and she had found that the newly departed liked something to do with their hands.

She took the book down from the shelf between the brass scales and a jar of blue quartz that had come from a jumble sale in Hull. The cover had gone soft at the corners. Recently Deceased, it said, in letters that had once been gold. She had not written it, but she had penciled the margins for forty years, one frightened person at a time.
'Chapter four,' she said, and read him the bit about the bus shelter. Stay under the roof. Do not accept a lift from anyone who claims to know your mother. Dennis nodded at each line like a boy in assembly. When he asked why she had a copy at all, she turned the book round to show him the flyleaf, where her own neat hand had written Marjorie Penhale, 1971. He looked at it, then at her, then at the black hat on the hook by the door, its brim grey with dust.
'You're not dead,' he said. 'You're the one who's supposed to read it.'
She poured the tea and didn't answer. Out past the window the shelter lamp flickered on, and a woman in a red coat was already waiting beneath it, patient, a book of her own held against her chest.
