Pin-up woman with rose and spider on ribs

Traditional · Ribs · Colour · Photo

A stylised woman's face with dark, sculpted hair and a red rose tucked behind one ear, with her hand raised near her chin and red nails visible. Below her, a large spider sits on a web, with bold black outlines and solid fills throughout. The diptych pairs a full view of the piece on the side of the torso with a tight crop of the face, showing smooth shading in the skin tones and green eyes.

Dear Hetty,

The big top came down on Tuesday in a field outside Ashford, and Pallister had the men fold the canvas so slowly that half the village stood at the gate to watch. I have kept the spider. Her name is Mrs Gosling, and she has not eaten since the Wednesday before, which Pallister says is a sign of nothing at all.

Every night for eleven years I stood on the rope in my black silk with a red rose tucked behind one ear. Tibor threw his knives around the edges of me, close enough to hear them thunk into the board, and Mrs Gosling came down on her silver thread from the rafters to settle on my wrist. People paid a shilling to see her drop, and she never once missed her mark. I used to think that was the only true thing in the whole show.

Last night the lamps went out one by one along the lane, and I sat in the caravan painting my nails the colour of a fresh cut, the way I always did before the first act. The varnish is the last thing I own that nobody else paid for. When I finally went to fetch the spider from her jar, the jar was empty and a web was strung across the caravan door, so fine and so exact that I had to lean close to see it was there at all. She had worked through the night. Whatever she was catching, it was not me.

I have left the door open and the rose on the sill. Tibor says the Pallister wagons head for Margate on Monday, but I think I will take the train instead and let the spider keep the road.
