Profile of a woman in a wide-brimmed hat with a flower

Traditional · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A woman in profile wears a wide-brimmed hat with a ribbon band and a bow, set against a solid hat crown. Below her chin, a five-petalled flower with a dark centre sits beside several pointed leaves. The bold black outlines are paired with stippled and smooth grey shading on the hat and face, and the design is shown in black ink only against pale skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nell had the shutters off and the first tray in before the church clock struck half four, the oven door open a crack so the dark kitchen smelled of hot crust and yeast. Her wide-brimmed hat hung on the nail by the back door where it always hung before the shop woke, its ribbon bow gone soft with steam. She did not need a lamp to know it was there.

Mr Pell came in at a quarter to five for his usual four cottage loaves, stamping the cold off his boots on the mat. He watched her slide the peel under the bread and said nothing for a while, which was how she knew he wanted to say something. Then he told her his Lily had sailed from Southampton the week before, bound for a position in a New York laundry, and that she had gone in a hat just like that one, with a sprig of sweet briar tucked behind the bow.

Nell wrapped the loaves in brown paper and did not mention the briar. She had pinned it there herself the morning Lily came asking for work, and afterwards she kept the spray in a jam jar on the windowsill until the petals dropped and the stems turned brown. She had never asked the girl to stay. She had only asked her to wear something decent for the boat.

She took a sugared bun from the cooling rack, pressed a single pale icing flower onto its top with the tip of a knife, and wrapped it for the old man. "For the road," she said. He put it in his coat pocket without looking at it. When the door shut behind him, the first grey light had reached the brim of the hat on its nail, and she left it there, ribbon and all, for the morning.
