Woman in feathered headdress on upper arm

Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A realistic portrait of a woman in a dense feathered headdress with a circular medallion at the side. The soft shading and fine detail in the face and feathers create strong contrast and depth. The design wraps around the upper arm, with the feathers framing the head and fading into the background.

Dear Win,

The plumes came yesterday in a tea chest that smelt of camphor and somebody's pipe, and I have not been able to get the smell out of the back room since. Mr Halloran at the Co-op sent them up from Bristol for the Whit Walk, forty-two ostrich tips dyed the grey of wet slate, with a note saying the order was for the Sands girl's wedding. Nobody in Hebden has ever ordered grey for a wedding. I told Mrs Sands so when she came in with her mouth set, and she told me to make them up as they came.

So I did. Two evenings at the bench with the wire and the glue pot, bending each quill back so the fronds lift like smoke off a bonfire. Under the lining of the box I found a brass button stamped with an anchor, a hatpin with a glass bead, and a photograph folded in four. It showed a woman in a plain cotton dress standing on the step of this very shop in 1931, squinting at whoever held the camera, with a feather tucked behind her ear as if she had only just taken it off.

I shan't make the wedding hat. I have fixed the plumes to a cardboard stand instead, written the Sands name on the lid in pencil, and tonight I am going to walk it round to the church myself. Mother always said a hat should be worn by the person it was made for. I have a feeling that box was never meant for the Sands girl at all.

Your loving sister, Dorothy
