Woman in mandala print t-shirt with arm tattoo
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A woman with her head cropped out of frame wears a white t-shirt printed with a black and white mandala design and the words Vibe With Me in black script. Her arms are partly visible, with a dark tattoo on one forearm and small marks on the other hand and wrist. The photo is taken indoors in bright light, with the shirt filling most of the frame.

You have been snowed into the Hollin Cross inn since Tuesday, and by Thursday the only thing left to draw on is the back of the bar tab pad. Mrs Ffion Greave, who keeps the place with two stiff-kneed collies, lends you a blunt pencil and says the guests before you filled every margin of the old ledger with something. You find it on page forty: a circle, then a ring inside the circle, then petals, then petals inside those, until the whole page seems to hum like a struck bell.

Nobody is in the mood for talk. The fire sinks to a red eye. The wind works at the shutters like someone trying to remember a tune. You start your own circle, and it wobbles, so you copy the small four-pointed bloom in the corner where some earlier hand gave up on a stem. You keep going. Hours pass on the ledger's grey paper, and the drifts outside stop being a threat and become a wall that keeps the rest of the world politely away.
On the third morning a ploughman with a grey horse clears the lane. You settle your bill, which is smaller than you expected, because Ffion has drawn a line through half the entries and says the ink was wasted on them anyway. Before you leave you turn the ledger so she can see the page. At the very centre of your mandala, in capitals you did not plan, you have written the words the ploughman's boy kept shouting at the dogs all week. Ffion reads them aloud, laughs until she has to sit on the stairs, and says that's the first thing anyone's written in that book in forty years that made the place feel warm.
