Mandala, moon and kissing couple on an upper arm

Traditional · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A black and white photograph of an upper arm tattoo, with a large mandala-style rosette and a flower at the top, a crescent moon and small stars below, and a vintage-style couple kissing inside a circular frame. The linework is bold and solid with shading in the figures and the rosette. The arm fills the right side of the frame, with a dark t-shirt and blonde hair at the top, and the tattoo is the clear focus.

Dad said the moon over Saltcombe pier was too bright for a dance hall, that it made everyone look like they were being photographed. Nobody listened. The Pavilion ceiling was hung with paper rosettes, pleated in rings the size of cartwheels, and Mrs Pryce had lit the lanterns three hours early so the whole room smelt of hot dust and Brylcreem.

Ray Dunning stood by the doorway with his cap in both hands, the way a man does at a funeral, and I knew from across the floor that he had come to say something he didn't want to. He was shipping out on the Tuesday boat. He asked me to dance anyway. I said my sister would have my hide if I left her alone at the bar, so he went out onto the pier by himself, and I followed him twenty minutes later with my coat over my arm.

Bea watched us from the rail, counting stars out loud and losing her place every time a gull dropped out of the dark. The crescent moon hung right above the lamp at the pier's end, and when Ray kissed me the rosette lantern swung back and forth on its wire behind us, throwing light across the boards like a slow wheel turning.

I kept one of those paper rosettes. It came down in the morning when the hall was swept, and I folded it flat inside my coat pocket. Ray's boat went out on the Tuesday. Every clear night since, I've stood at the window and counted the stars for both of us, and I always lose my place at the same bright one.
