Keep Girl Power lettering on forearm
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A woman wearing a white t-shirt with a black mandala print and the words Vibe With Me stands with her hands raised toward the camera. Black script reading KEEP GRL PWR runs along her left forearm, and small dark marks sit on her fingers. A darker sleeve tattoo with shading covers the upper arm of her other arm, and the photo is bright with a soft, even light.

Mind the chair by the urn, the left leg wobbles, same as it did in 1987. Sit down, love, and let me tell you how the words got on the science block wall, because the reunion committee has never once asked the woman who held the paint tin.

It began in April with KEEP GRL PWR in black marker on the mop cupboard door. Then the bike sheds. Then the bottom of the stage curtain, in capitals so careful you could have sold them. Mrs Ferrier, the deputy head, scrubbed them off every Friday with a bucket and a face like vinegar. Nobody owned up. The fourth years swore it was the sixth form, the sixth form blamed the chess club, and the chess club said nothing at all, which was suspicious.
Then one Friday Mrs Ferrier came in with her bucket and found the words back on the wall, freshly done, and beneath them thirty-one small initials, one for every girl in Year Ten who had been sent to the head that term for talking back. She stood there so long the caretaker came to see whether she'd fallen asleep. She did not scrub. She fetched a tin of magnolia from the office and painted over the lot herself, badly, leaving the edges showing.
Go on, have a biscuit. Walk round the back of the science block tonight and you'll still see the ghost of that K through the paint, worn smooth by all the fingers that have touched it since.
