A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Maurice Abbott had been painting shop fascias in Hebden Bridge for forty-one years, and he could tell a bad sign from the far side of the valley. On the Thursday his granddaughter Priya brought him three drafts for the window of her new bakery, all curly, all swashed, with ribbons looping under the words like bunting. He pushed them back across the bench with one finger. "Block capitals," he said. "Nobody reads a swash at a bus stop."

He ruled a grid on an offcut of ply with a carpenter's pencil and laid the letters out with his tape, counting the gaps in his head the way his own father had taught him, one stroke wide between each letter and not a hair more. The word was short. Priya wanted a name after it, or a date, or the thing the bakery sold, and he told her to wait until the paint had gone off.

The sign went up in March. Passers-by read it in the rain, the way he had intended: KEEP, then a space big enough for anyone to stand in. Within a week there were biro marks on the glass beneath the letters, a line of hearts, a phone number, a child's drawing of a loaf. Maurice took it all as proof that a good sign leaves room for people.

On the last Saturday of the month he came in early and found a girl of about nine at the window with a stub of purple chalk, copying the word onto the pavement in letters that wobbled. Beside them she added GRL PWR in smaller capitals, then stepped back to check the spacing, as if she had been watching him work all along.
