The moon had been knocking at the sun's shutters for three nights running, and by the third the lamplighters on Carrow Street were complaining that nobody could tell which of the two was on duty. Mrs Adeyemi at the chip shop said the sun was only sulking. The old night watchman said he had lent his light to a baker's boy and never asked for it back, and that was the whole trouble.

Nobody believed the moon when she climbed to the roof of the Mill Street car park with a pencil and a sheet of tracing paper. She drew a ring of petals around an empty middle, the way the light fell on a dinner plate when the sun came through the kitchen window, and inside the ring she wrote what she had never managed to say to his face: love by the moon, love by the sun, as if the two were one sentence read from either side. Then she pinned it to the wall of the bus shelter where the sun always waited for his tram.
He read it at dawn with a flask of tea going cold in his hand. He had not known she could draw. He had not known a circle could hold two names if you left the middle blank. He stood there until the first delivery van honked, and when he came back that evening he was smaller, the way a sun is in winter, and he sat down beside her on the wall of the car park without a word.
The paper is long gone. The ring is still there, painted into the brickwork in pale yellow where the sun leans against it at six, and dark grey where the moon waits for him to go.
