Lettering and lotus tattoos on arms
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A woman in a white t-shirt with a printed hamsa and lotus design shows black and grey tattoos on her arms. On the forearm, the words KEEP and GRL PWR sit above a small arrow, with a cursive script line below, all in simple black linework. On the upper arm, a shaded lotus and mandala-style pattern is partly visible, with the shirt design filling the centre of the frame.

Dear Nell,

I am writing this on a bench at Platform Four because the 17.42 has been cancelled twice and the departure board has stopped pretending otherwise. You will be furious to hear I missed the christening. The train from Hereford simply did not come, and a man in a hi-vis jacket told me the signal failure was in hand, which is what they say when nothing is. Mum's card is in my coat pocket, unsigned, with the drawing I made for the baby.
Here is the drawing, or what is left of it. I was sketching a hamsa on a paper napkin in the buffet, the open hand with the eye sitting in its palm, and then I started filling the fingers with lotus petals the way Gran used to shade her tea towels. A woman at the next table asked to see it. She said her son would want the eye in blue, so I borrowed a biro from the till girl and gave the napkin to the woman instead. I hope that counts as a kindness.
The board has changed again. Platform Two now, so I am off. I have written KEEP across the top of my ticket wallet in capitals, and under it GRL PWR, because the last time I set off without a plan I sat in the ladies' toilets at Crewe and cried until the hand dryer clicked itself off. Tell the baby her auntie was delayed by a signal box and a stubborn woman with a napkin, and that the arrow on my wallet points the right way.
Love, Bea.
