Lettering and floral tattoos on forearms
Lettering · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A woman wears a white t-shirt with a black and grey Om symbol and mandala print, and her bare arms show several tattoos. On one forearm a fine line arrow sits above the words KEEP, GRL and PWR, with a script phrase below it, while the other arm carries a red and dark floral piece and a small infinity symbol near the wrist. The photograph is framed from the chest down against a patterned backdrop, with the colour tattoos adding a contrast to the black ink lettering.

Dear Nell, Pryce has finally sold the middle poles of the big top to a scrapyard in Stockport, so for a fortnight now we have been performing under a sky that comes straight through the canvas. The elephants are fine. Dorothy, the one who sulks, has taken a liking to the new lad, which is more than I can say for the rest of us. I am painting the banners again because nobody else will climb the ladder with the tin of gloss.

Ruth wants her trapeze act billed as something new, so I have lettered KEEP across the top of the board, then GRL PWR underneath in the same red as the wagon wheels, because she said she wanted it loud enough to reach the back row of the car park at the Co-op. Below that, in small joined script, I have written carpe diem, which Pryce says is Latin for people who cannot afford a proper ringmaster. The arrow beside it took three goes. My hand kept wobbling at the point.
Last night, after the final house, Ruth sat on the caravan steps and showed me the little infinity sign she has inked near her wrist, the one Dad did in the back of the barn before he left us. She said the loop never closes, which is the whole point. I did not tell her the painted sign on the canvas will be flaking off by March, or that the cold has got into the wire.
I am sending this with the last of my wages, which Pryce now pays in tickets to Tenby. Come and see us before the big top goes. Bring the good scissors and a tin of white. Love, Bea.
