Woman portrait and anatomical heart on a forearm

Neo-trad · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo shows a woman's face in profile with her hair in a braided updo, topped by orange and pink flowers, with green leaves crossing beside her face. Below, a stylised red and orange anatomical heart with green and grey shaded areas sits at the lower edge of the design. The face is rendered in fine black linework with grey shading, while the flowers, leaves and heart use bold, flat colour, and the image shows the same design repeated side by side.

Dear Tomasz,

It is ten past four and the ovens have been warm since three, so you can tell Mrs Okafor's order will be late again. Not my fault: the flour man brought the wrong rye. I am writing this at the end of the steel table with a cup of tea going cold beside the proving baskets. Your handwriting is still pinned above the sink, the card for the seeded tin loaf, with the honey stain from the day you dropped the jar.

The starter has wanted feeding every morning since you left. When you were here I never believed in it, and you called it our difficult aunt. But she rises when I talk to her now, which is either a sign of something or proof I have been alone too long. Yesterday I found a dish of dried mint on the windowsill. I know it was yours. I did not throw it away.

I scored the first batch with a heart this morning, the way you always did for Sunday, though I am not sure I got the curve right. The crust split along the left side the way yours used to, the wild bit I never managed. Mrs Okafor will say it is lopsided. She will be right.

Come home for the Sunday bake if you can. Bring the good knife. The leaves on the lemon tree by the back door have gone yellow, and I cannot tell whether it wants water or wants to be let go.

Love, Ines
