Rose made from torn banknotes

Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A rose is built from rolled and torn banknotes, with the bill edges peeling back around the bloom. Shading is smooth and detailed, with strong contrast between deep shadows and lighter paper highlights. The design is wrapped around the limb against a plain background with a plastic-covered surface behind it.

He thought about the envelope his mum kept in the biscuit tin on the seventh floor of Ashgrove House. Forty pounds in tens and twenties, folded into quarters, saved from the Co-op till for a winter she never planned to need. She had pressed it into his hand the week the lift stopped working for good, and told him not to make a thing of it. He had made a thing of it anyway, and spent most of it on the lad with the van who moved them across the estate.

Dezi laughed when he saw the arm. He said it looked like money had grown out of the crack in the pavement and decided to bloom. Marcus didn't laugh. He pulled his sleeve down and walked the long concrete stairwell home, counting the flights out loud the way he used to when he was small, and at the sixth landing he stopped and peeled the tape from the back of the dressing, just to see the paper edges lift and settle again in the stairwell light.
