Woman portrait with birds and flowers on a calf
Calf · Mixed · Photo
A woman's face in profile is framed by poppy-like flowers and two small birds, with loose ink splashes and a dark swirl behind the head. The linework is sketchy with soft grey shading, and small peach and teal touches appear on the cheek and a mandala motif below the face. The design fills most of the calf and runs down towards the ankle, with a partial coloured tattoo visible at the lower left.

Now mind the wasps in the windfalls, and sit where I can see your face, because a story told to the back of someone's head is only half a story. This was the year the poppies came up through the bottom orchard as if someone had spilt a tin of paint across the grass, and the finches came with them, two of them, squabbling over the same Bramley.

A girl walked up the lane that August with a sketchbook under one arm and a jam jar of water she never seemed to empty. Her name was Ottilie Vane, and she said she painted what the light did before it moved on. Old Hob Greaves at the gate said nobody paints light, and she said, then I'll paint the things the light lands on. She sat under the Ribston tree for three weeks, drawing flowers until the pages curled like wet bark.
On the last evening of the month she came to my kitchen door with the book held shut against her chest. Inside, the poppies had grown up over a woman's face, and two birds sat in her hair, and beneath her chin a grey smudge swept down like a river in flood. I asked her which of them was real. She laughed and said the flowers would drop by Michaelmas, but the birds would come back to whoever kept the tree.
Next morning the sketchbook was gone from the table, and the cider shed wall had a new sparrow painted above the door in a few quick lines. Every September since, two finches sit on that wall and pick the seeds from the poppy heads, and I have never once shooed them away.
