The painter finally came round to the caravan this morning with the new banner rolled under his arm, and he unfurled it across the tailboard so I could see. Across the top, in those fat bubble letters he loves, was the word PSYCHO, and beneath it a girl with a dagger in her hand and a single tear running down her cheek. He said it was for Mr Vane's act, that the crowds needed something to scream at. I told him Mr Vane would not stand for it. He only smiled and said the word was the joke, not the girl.

Mr Vane has thrown knives at me every evening since May. I stand against the board with my arms out and he never misses. Last night a boy in the front row shouted that I looked frightened, and I was not. I was counting the blades in the rack, the way you taught me to count stitches when we were small and nothing else made sense.

The rain came in after the last show and the banner sagged on its poles. By morning the teardrop had run clean off the canvas and left a grey smear over the painter's careful lettering. Nobody else noticed. I did, and I kept the scrap of it in my apron pocket, because the joke, it turns out, had been painted in ink that does not hold water.
