Reading woman and tulip on forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A woman in a cloche hat and striped skirt stands in profile, reading a book, with a red tulip rising beside her on a thin ground line. The linework is black and bold with a clean, even outline, and the figure has flat solid areas of black and red. The tattoo is shown against plain pale skin and a white background, with a patterned fabric sleeve at the right edge of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mrs Penhaligon kept the lending library above the chemist on Fore Street, and every Thursday she watched the same woman climb the stairs with her gloves already off. The grey cloche was always pulled low, and the book was always a novel she had finished the week before, so there was nothing to return but the habit of coming.

Nobody in Porthallow knew her name. She signed the ledger with a single initial, and when Mrs Penhaligon asked whether she wanted something new, she only tapped the spine nearest her hand and said, 'Something that ends badly, if you have it.' They kept a shelf for those. Mrs Penhaligon stocked it out of spite for the men who tied up their endings too neatly.

One Thursday in March the woman did not come. Mrs Penhaligon waited until the gas lamps were lit, then walked down to the harbour with an unreturned copy tucked under her arm. On the wall by the slipway someone had chalked a red tulip beside a line of tide marks, its petals already smudged by rain. Beneath it lay a slip of paper weighted with a pebble. It read: The ending was fine. I only wanted to know someone else had read it too.

Mrs Penhaligon filed the slip in the ledger, and the following Thursday she set a new book on the counter with a ribbon already marking the last chapter.
