Roses and eye sketch with tattoo machine
Neo-trad · Black and grey · Flash
A pencil drawing of a tattoo design showing a dense cluster of roses with leaves, partly framing an open eye with a defined brow. A tattoo machine and wisps of smoke sit at the top of the composition, with thin pin-like marks radiating from the edges. The outlines are bold and the roses are shaded with soft grey tones on a pale background.

Nell was ten the summer her grandfather stopped letting her near the rose beds. Walter had planted them along the south wall the year the bombs fell on the Ramsgate docks, and he talked to them the way other men talk to dogs. By day he kept the chandlery's back room, where he ran a buzzing machine for sailors who wanted anchors and mermaids on their shoulders. Every evening he came out smelling of ink and Dettol and knelt in the soil until the light went.

"Don't hum," he told her. "They don't like a hum." She had been humming a shanty one of his sailors sang, the one about a girl in Whitby who sold her shadow to a fisherman. He snapped a stem and showed her the thorns, then turned his left hand over to show the pin marks across the knuckles, a cluster of dark dots that never faded. "Every one of those is a man who sat in my chair and didn't pay. The roses take their due."
That August a stranger came to the gate with a drawing rolled under his arm and asked for Walter by a name nobody in the village had used in forty years. Walter didn't answer him. He went into the shed, came back with the machine, and worked for a long time on the stranger's arm while the roses bent slowly towards the wrist. When the stranger left, there was a single open eye set in the centre of a rose, and one bloom on the wall had gone black at its heart.
Walter scrubbed his hands at the outdoor tap until the water ran clear. The next morning Nell found a new bud, pale and tight, at the very top of the wall. Beneath it, pressed into the mud, was the print of a boot pointing back towards the gate, and the stranger's drawing lay folded on the path, the eye on it already open.
