Pencil and coloured pencil tattoo design of a woman wearing a wolf over her head, with flowers and red berries in her hair, in a neo-traditional style.

Woman with wolf headdress and flowers

Neo-trad · Mixed · Flash

A detailed drawing of a woman with long dark hair and a wolf's head resting over her crown, with its mouth open. Pink and pale blue flowers, leaves and red-ringed berries frame her face and fall across her shoulder, and a beaded necklace hangs at her chest. Fine graphite linework and soft shading are combined with touches of coloured pencil.

The wolf had lived in the chapel of Hollin Keep since the roof came down, and nobody in Harrow Dale went up the hill after dark to ask it to leave. Tam's mother had told him that the wolf ate boys who came up without bread. He had no bread, so he took a twist of salt in a rag and reasoned that any wolf would be thirsty enough to want it.

The path was choked with bramble and rosebay, and the ruin was quieter than a ruin ought to be. Halfway up the stair he found the lady sitting on a fallen capital, with the wolf's grey head resting above her brow like a crown that had come to her by inheritance. She did not look at him for long. The wolf did, with eyes like wet slate, and its jaw opened to show the teeth.

"Salt," she said, as though it were an accusation. "Then you had better earn your supper. The rowan over the well has berries ringed red as a warning. Bring me the first ones it gives, and I will show you the way down that does not pass the gallows." Tam climbed. The berries came away in his fist, cold and sour, and when he turned round the wolf had come to stand at his shoulder, pale flowers caught in its ruff. It did not bite him.

He carried the berries down through the dale in the grey of morning. Brannock was at his gate with the salt cart, and he looked at the red fruit and the wolf padding behind, and said nothing at all. At the bottom of the hill the wolf stopped, turned, and went back up alone, and Tam saw that someone had tucked fresh rosebay into the grey fur before it left.
