Woman with flowers and cat ears line drawing
Neo-trad · Black and grey · Flash
A black ink line drawing of a woman with closed eyes, cat ears and a crown of peonies and small five-petalled flowers, with long hair flowing down around her. She holds a heart-shaped object and an angular, blade-like form against her chest. Linework is bold and even, with hatching on the hair and shading, and the design is shown in black ink only on a pale sheet.

Dearest Anwen, the peonies came into bloom three days early this year, which the court astrologer calls a warning and the gardeners call a wet spring. I have chosen to believe the gardeners. You will also want to know that the Queen's new chamberlain, the one with the cat ears who sulks in the orangery, has finally stopped blaming me for the missing silver shears.

I found the shears in the rose walk, tangled in a snag of hair, and I have kept them in my apron since. Mind the lacquered box the Duke sent up from the coast. It holds a heart cut from green glass that is warm to the touch, and a blade forged to fit beside it. Nobody in the palace will say who the blade was made for. Last night the heart sat on the windowsill with the blade laid against it, so close that the wax seal had melted into a pattern like petals.
I went up with a lamp and found her in the east gallery, sitting on the cold floor with her hair pooled around her like a river that had forgotten where to go. She was not asleep. She said she had been asked to choose between keeping the heart and keeping the blade, and that the kingdom would forget whichever she let go. I told her that was nonsense. She laughed, then asked whether I had ever held something so long my hands forgot how to open.
I did not answer. I sat with her until the lamp ran dry. This morning both objects are back in the box, the lid is shut, and every peony on the north wall has turned its face toward the glass. Come home at midsummer. Bring your good scissors. I will meet you at the gate with flowers in my hair, though I expect you will tell me I look ridiculous.
