Unicorn girl with roses tattoo design
Botanical · Mixed · Flash
A pen drawing of a girl with a unicorn horn and long flowing hair, framed by peonies, roses, leaves and scrolling swirls. The linework is bold black outline with fine hatching and stippling in the hair and leaves, and the shading is built from cross-hatch and dot work. Pink and teal marker accents on the arms and roses add a limited touch of colour against the mostly black and white composition.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
Mum always said the unicorn was the cheapest act on the Harrowgate Michaelmas circuit, because nobody ever bought a ticket to see a horse with a horn in its head. They bought tickets to see Lark, the painted girl in the ticket booth, who wore a spiral horn strapped above her fringe and peonies pinned into her hair every night. Nobody knew who had pinned them there first. I only knew it was my job to carry the bucket of pink and teal paint up the steps of the waltzer each evening so she could touch up the petals on her wrists before the lamps came on.

The fair moved every fortnight, from a village green in Lincolnshire to a car park outside Hull, and Lark never once let anyone see her without her gloves. I learned to sort the coloured bulbs and fold the canvas awnings while she sketched the same rose again and again in the margins of her ledger, black ink first, then a wash of colour that always ran a little past the lines. She said the lines were the honest part. The colour was just what she wanted the world to believe.
In October the rain came sideways for three days and the big top sagged like a wet sail. On the fourth morning Lark was gone, and the ledger lay open on the caravan step with a new drawing across two pages: a girl's hair turned to swirling scrolls, a horn like a spiral staircase, and at the bottom, in careful pencil, my own name. Beside it she had drawn a gate with no fence around it.
I took the bucket up the steps that evening anyway, and found the lamps already lit.
