Wonderland flash with top hat and pocket watch
Neo-trad · Mixed · Flash
A line drawing of a tattoo design showing a top hat, a pocket watch on a chain, a bottle labelled Drink me, a mushroom, a rose and a checkerboard floor. The clouds and some outlines are drawn in purple, while the main linework is black on white. The composition stacks the hat and watch in the centre with the bottle, rose and mushroom around them.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
Mr Oswin Tallow had kept the pawnshop on Pennyfeather Lane for thirty-one years and had never once been surprised by a customer, until the Tuesday a woman in a crooked top hat set a silver pocket watch on his counter and asked him to hold it for a day. "It only keeps good time going the wrong way," she said, "and I'd rather it wasn't in my pocket when I'm hungry."

He took the watch, of course, because its case was chased with tiny roses and still warm, as though someone had only just put it down. A paper tag hung from its chain, and on the back, scratched in a careful hand, were the words DRINK ME and beneath them DO NOT TRUST THE CHECKERS. When he looked up, the woman had gone, and the door was swinging on its hinge with a sound like a teacup set down.
Through the back window the lane had begun to tilt into a pattern of black and cream squares, cobbles running uphill towards the river. Pale mushrooms pushed up through the gutters, polite as footmen, and a rose climbed the drainpipe without any hurry at all. Oswin wound the watch to check the hour and saw the hands going backwards, each tick lifting a little dusk off the sky. On the shelf sat a green bottle with a tag knotted round its neck, and he found he was thirsty in the way that only happens in dreams.
He did not drink. He wound the watch forward, the way a sensible man does, and the lane straightened, the squares faded back to grey stone, and the woman was standing at his counter again with her hand held out. "You kept it the right way round," she said, pleased. "Most people try to be clever." She took the watch and left him the bottle, which he has been pouring out for lost children ever since.
