Stitch in an ornate frame with roses
Traditional · Colour · Flash
A blue cartoon character sits within a gold ornate frame, with a curled banner across the top reading OHANA. Three pink and red roses with dark shaded petals and green leaves sit along the bottom of the frame. The bold black outlines and flat colour fills are drawn with coloured pencil and marker on a cream paper background.

The blue creature turned up behind the coconut shy on the second night of Dunmere Fair, sitting on an upturned crate as though it had paid for the seat. It had one ear the size of a dinner plate and one eye that did most of the looking. Nobody claimed it. Mrs Ferrier at the candyfloss van said it had come off the generator lorry, and the driver swore it had been riding on the roof since Hereford.

I ran the shy with a ledger, a tin apron and a chipped front tooth, and by Thursday the thing was keeping count for me. It tapped the nearest bottle each time I threw, then clapped its small hands when a coconut went over. When a lad from the ghost train tried to shift its crate, it stood up, puffed its cheeks and gave him such a look that he apologised to me instead. I started leaving it a cup of milk and a sugared doughnut from the hatch, which it ate with great seriousness, one bite at a time, like a magistrate.
On the Sunday we struck the tents in the rain. The rides went off down the motorway in convoy and I had only my old van, with a passenger seat that let in water. The creature climbed up beside me and would not be moved. 'You can't come,' I said. 'There's no room for a family in a van this size.' It looked at me, then at the wet window, then at the gold-framed mirror I'd rescued from the carousel and bolted to the dashboard for luck. The word OHANA curled across the top of it. I had always thought it was somebody's name.
I drove the whole way to Leominster without the radio. When I glanced across, the seat was empty except for a dent in the cushion and one pink petal stuck to the glass. I pulled into a lay-by and sat a long time, watching the rain run down the frame. When I finally looked up, two dark roses had been drawn in the steam on the windscreen, one large and one small, with a blue ear curled between them.
