Wood grain tattoo on upper arm

Realism · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

The tattoo covers the upper arm and part of the shoulder with a wood grain pattern, including two prominent knots with concentric rings. The thin, wavy grain lines are drawn in brown and reddish tones and follow the curve of the arm, giving a convincing timber effect. The image is a close crop of the arm against a grey top, with the tattoo filling most of the frame.

Mind the chalk line, love, it's wet. Right, you want the one about Mrs Ferrier's oak door, the one that came up the Thames on a barge in the winter of the big fog and wouldn't sit true in any frame they tried. Old Tobias Crane had the yard then, down by the Rotherhithe wharves, where the lamps buzzed all night and the rats kept their own hours. He took the door on a Tuesday and swore it was the finest piece of timber he'd ever had under his plane.

But there was a knot near the top of it, dark and round as a gull's eye, with rings spreading out from it like ripples on still water. Every time Tobias planed the stile, the grain beside that knot would run the wrong way, lifting and curling as if the tree still had a mind to lean toward the hill it grew on. He filed the blade, he waxed it, he sang at it. Nothing helped. By the third night he was talking to the wood like a man talks to a dog that won't come in.

On the fourth night, the fog came off the river so thick he could hardly see the bench. He set the plane down, put his palm flat against the knot, and felt the warmth of it. Then he did a strange thing. He left that one knot unplaned, cut the rest of the door clean and square, and hung it on Mrs Ferrier's hinges without a word of complaint from anyone.

So if you go down to the wharf tonight, you'll see it still on the step, that door, with its eye open and the grain climbing up and up towards the dark.
