He was a cartographer's clerk, and the chart room was where the old maps were kept under lamplight, rolled like sleeping cats. Every Sunday the master laid the world flat on the long table and asked the boys to find the places that were not yet drawn. Tobias always found them. He drew a coastline where the sea stopped being sea, and a compass with its four winds named in the old tongue, and the master pinned his work to the wall and said nothing at all, which was praise.

One January a letter came from the north with no name on it, only a shell pressed into the wax. Inside was a pine cone, dry as bone, and a line in pencil: the trees grow on the far side of the ice. Nobody believed it. Tobias did. He packed a satchel with dividers, a bottle of ink that would not freeze, and the cone, and he walked down to the docks through the fog while the bells of St Mary's struck two.

He never came back to the chart room. But on the wall above the master's desk there is a new sheet, pale as skin, and at its edge a small compass rose with its letters running off the paper. Look at it when the lamps are low. Every point on it still points somewhere, and the cone sits on the sill beneath, waiting for someone brave enough to carry it back.
