A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The old woman had walked every lane in the county and still could not find the gate at the bottom of Hollin Orchard, so in the last week of August she sent her grandson up the ladder with a pot of lime wash and told him to paint the world on the apple store wall. He had seen maps in the schoolroom, but he drew them from the inside out: first the long hooked coast of the north, then the bulge of land below it, cut at the waist by water he had no name for.

Each morning the wasps came to the sweet windfalls and he shooed them off with his cap and went back to the wall. The old woman came out in her apron to check his work. She laid a crooked finger on the southern point and said that was where the cold came from, and on the scatter of isles off the east she said people lived there who ate only plums. He did not argue. He had enough paint to mark every place she named.

On the last evening, when the lime had dried white and the ladder leaned against the oldest tree, she took a stub of charcoal from her pocket and drew two arrows crossing at the middle of the wall, their tails feathered so the wind would know which way to lean. She wrote N at the top, then E, S and W at the other points. The boy looked for the gate in all the drawn corners and did not find it. The old woman tapped the wall where the arrows met and said the gate was never in the orchard, only wherever you pointed when the wall ran out.
