World map outline on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A single-needle style outline of the world map sits across the forearm, showing the Americas, Africa, Europe, Asia and Australia in thin dark line. The linework is even and unshaded, with no fill or grey wash. The skin is pale and the tattoo is the clear focal point, set against a dark sleeve on the left and a wooden floor on the right.

Hush now, the band's taking its break, so you'll hear me properly. Ada Pryce had the steadiest hand in Hollins Mill, and she used it for nothing but drawing. Her husband Tom sold lorry parts from a shed off the ring road and danced every Saturday at the Palais as if the floor might open onto the sea.

The trouble was Tom had never been further than Blackpool. So on wet evenings Ada sat under the lamp and drew the whole world for him on the back of a tallyman's ledger, one thin line at a time. No colour, no shading. She said shading was for places you'd actually stood in, and nobody in our street had been anywhere worth shading. Tom would trace the coast of Africa with his thumb and say, Go on then, Ada, where's the sea going to take us?
The winter the shed shut, Tom wanted to leave for work in Canada, and Ada would not let him go without something to carry. She sat him at the kitchen table, dipped a darning needle in Indian ink, and pricked the continents onto his forearm, one careful line after another, while the kettle screamed and went cold. It took her all night. She never once lifted the needle to look back at the map.
Tom went to Canada, then Chile, then Perth, and he wrote every month with a postcard of wherever he'd landed. Ada never went anywhere. But when he came home at last and lifted that arm to wave at us across the dance floor, the Americas swung out over the boards like a pair of wings, and Ada just smiled and said, There, you see, the whole world's still on you.
