World map and paper plane on a forearm
Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows a world map built from vertical hatched lines and stippled dots, with continents and islands filled in and edges left broken. A simple outlined paper plane sits to the right of the map, drawn in a single clean black line. The image is black and white and the photo is taken close up across the inner forearm against a dark background.

Nobody in the drawing office at Hallam and Pyke believed the new chart would be finished by spring. Sanjay Mistry had been given the Atlantic and the African coast to hatch, and the ink kept clotting on his vertical strokes, so he wrote to the head of the room asking for a steadier nib. The reply came back folded into a paper plane, flown across the floor by Winnie Cole from the next desk. It said only: hatch the land, dot the islands, and leave the edges to the weather.

He did as he was told. Each continent went down in lines running north to south, like rain against a window, and the islands he stippled with the tip of a needle until his thumb ached. By the time he reached the Pacific he had stopped using a ruler altogether. Winnie watched from across the room, folding another plane from a spoiled sheet and tossing it so it skimmed past the lamp and landed nose down on his blotter, as if it had come from much further away.
The chart went out in June, pinned to the wall of a shipping office in Rotterdam, and nobody complained about the broken coastlines. A clerk asked why the sea looked as though a storm had passed through it, and Sanjay said land was only as solid as the lines that held it. The clerk laughed and went back to his ledger.
Winnie kept the last plane. It sits in a biscuit tin in my cousin's loft, its nose still sharp, and she never once told anyone where she had meant it to land.
