World map outline on a thigh
Fine line · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
The photograph shows two bare legs, with a single-line outline tattoo of world map continents on the outer thigh of the leg in the lower left. The linework is thin and even in dark ink, with no shading, and the outlines of landmasses are drawn with small islands scattered along the edges. The warm, low lighting gives the skin an orange glow, and the frame is cropped tightly to the legs against a dark background.

The chart office on Harrow Lane had been shut since Michaelmas, but Mr Pellow kept the gas low in the back room because the damp got into the paper otherwise. At half past eleven on the night of the flood, Ada Brennan came up the stairs with a lamp in one hand and a sheet of vellum rolled under her arm, and she did not bother to knock. The coastline she had drawn was wrong, she said. Not the big shapes, which were fine, but the small islands along the western edge, which she had inked from memory and which now refused to sit where they belonged.

Pellow took the vellum and held it to the lamp. The islands were there, a scatter of tiny ink knots like crumbs left on a plate, and each one was joined to the mainland by a line so fine it seemed to hesitate. He traced one with his thumb. It was warm. He said nothing about that. He only asked her where she had been drawing it, and she said on the inside of her own leg, where the ink could not run off in the rain, and then she laughed at herself for saying it.
He found a pen and corrected the outline by lamplight, moving the smallest island a finger's width north, until the map sat true. Ada watched him do it and then went down the stairs without her lamp, and the street outside was dark all the way to the water. In the morning the vellum lay flat on the desk, and every coastline on it was correct, though nobody remembered drawing the last one.
