Small sun tattoo on a thigh
Fine line · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A small sun with a circular centre and short, evenly spaced rays is drawn in thin black linework on the upper thigh. The lines are clean and single-weight, with no shading, and the ink sits on tanned skin against a plain white background. The photo shows both legs bent at the knee, with the feet at the top of the frame.

Mam says the sun didn't show itself again until the Tuesday after the lifeboat launch, and by then she had given up counting the grey days on the kitchen calendar. I drew one on the back of the tide timetable so Ruth would have something to point at. Eight rays, spaced evenly, the way Grandad used to chalk them on the board outside the chip shop when he wanted tourists to believe the summer would last.

Ruth is nine and doesn't trust drawings. She made me do it again in biro on the back of her hand, then rubbed it off with spit and said the real one would be better. She was right. The real one goes orange over the breakwater and makes the gulls look gilded, which they aren't, they're just gulls.
On Wednesday the fog came in off the water so thick the lighthouse beam only reached the first buoy. Mam put the kettle on and told us the old story about the sun being stolen by the sea and kept in a jar at the bottom of the harbour. Ruth asked whether the jar had a lid. Mam said everything has a lid if you look hard enough.
Thursday, at half past six, the sky over the water split like an egg yolk and Ruth was out of the door before anyone could find her shoes. I followed with the timetable folded in my pocket. We stood on the wet stones and watched it climb, and I didn't tell her I'd drawn the rays a touch too long on purpose, so it would look like it was reaching for us.
