World map outline on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A single-line outline of the world map runs across the forearm, showing the continents and larger islands as thin black lines. The linework is even and clean, with no shading, and the ink appears solid black against the skin. The composition is a plain close crop on pale skin, with the wrist and a string of bracelets at the left edge.

The 16:12 has been cancelled again, and the lost property cupboard behind Platform Two is the only room in the station that still has its heating on. You sit on the high stool with a tea going cold at your elbow, sorting a biscuit tin of odd gloves, when a man in a wet anorak slides a paper napkin across the counter. "Found it in a seat pocket on the Carlisle service," he says. "Thought it might be yours."

It is a world map, drawn in one unbroken line of biro. The continents are pressed so hard into the paper that the ink has worn through at the tip of South America, and the islands are dotted like crumbs around the edges. There is no name on it and no date, only a small ring around a spot off the coast of Western Australia, as if someone had meant to come back to it and been called away mid-stroke.

You know whose hand it is before you turn it over. Your father drew these for you every summer on whatever was nearest, placemats and envelopes and once the back of a bus timetable, always starting with Africa and always forgetting the Pacific. He never once made it past the ring. You fold the napkin along the lines of Asia and slide it into the drawer marked Unclaimed, then pick up the pen and write on the form in careful capitals: ONE MAP, HAND-DRAWN, SOMEONE WAS GOING SOMEWHERE.

Outside, the 16:12 finally pulls in with its lights blinking. The man thanks you and runs for it, and you stand at the window until the carriages are gone, tracing the outline of the coast on the cold glass with one finger.
