Small aeroplane tattoo on a finger

Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A hand is raised in a V shape against a blurred world map, with black nail polish and several silver rings worn on the fingers. A small, simple black aeroplane silhouette sits on the side of the finger that is folded down. The ink is solid black with clean edges, and the muted, multicoloured map sits softly out of focus behind the hand.

The Thursday tea dance at the Marine Ballroom in Saltcote had not been cancelled in thirty-one years, not even the winter the boiler gave out and Mrs Pardoe played the piano in her coat. So when Ruth Adair came through the glass doors with a hatbox under one arm and a ticket folded into her glove, Dolores at the cloakroom assumed she had come for her umbrella and did not look up from her knitting.

Walter Pim, who taught the quickstep to half the town and had never once been further than Ramsgate, was waiting by the bandstand with his shoes already off. Behind the bar hung the map he had bought from a travelling salesman in 1949, its pins scattered across the continents like dropped sugar. Every pin marked someone who had waltzed out of Saltcote and never waltzed back. He had never put one in himself.

Ruth crossed the sprung floor without a word and took his hand in the old closed hold. The band struck up 'Moonlight Serenade' and they moved through it, his feet remembering the count better than hers did. Near the end she pressed a small paper aeroplane into his palm, folded from her boarding pass, with Lisbon written in pencil across one wing.

Walter studied it for a long while. Then he walked to the map, pushed a single pin into the blank Atlantic beside Portugal, and hooked the little plane onto its head. 'You'll need a return,' he said. Ruth laughed, pulled on her gloves, and left the hatbox on the stage for him to carry home, and the record went on spinning with nobody left to dance to it.
