World map outline on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A clenched fist and forearm are shown in profile, with a black outline map of the world tattooed across the outer forearm. The linework is thin and continuous, with the continents drawn as simple outlines and no shading. The photograph is in black and white against a plain, textured pale wall, with two silver bands worn near the wrist.

Mr Fenwick never lifted his pen once a coastline had started, which is why the apprentices called his plates the Unbroken. Every shore ran in one thin pass from the first headland to the last, so a man could follow the Atlantic's edge with his thumb and never find a gap. My job was to hold the lamp steady while he worked and keep the ink from drying on the brass.

In the spring the Admiralty sent back the Pacific plate, he found a fault in it. The Cape had been drawn a half-inch too far north, and he would not correct it with a scraper. 'We'll redraw the whole south,' he said, and he sent me to the wharf for fresh copper and a boy to carry it. I remember the sun coming through the workshop window onto the cold lines, how the outlines held still on the metal like wire.
He died before the plate was finished. I took the burin up myself that autumn, and for three nights I drew the coast of Africa over and over, never once lifting the point, until my wrist ached and the line finally closed where his should have. The Cape sat where it belonged, and the sea ran round it without a break.
When the new sheets went out, nobody asked who had engraved them. I never told them. Some nights I still hear his voice in the workshop saying the world only holds together if you keep moving the point.
