Yahweh script lettering on a wrist
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of the single word Yahweh written in black script lettering across the inner wrist. The letters have flowing joins, a looped Y and a tapered finish, with solid black ink and soft grey edges. The skin is pale and the word sits centred and horizontal, with a tiled floor and a dark object blurred in the background.

Dear Nell, the big top came down in Shrewsbury on Tuesday, and the Harrow Brothers lost their last elephant to a farmer in Powys who paid in cash and grumbled the whole time he loaded her. I have spent the week lettering wagons for the auction men, which is a sorry job, since every name I paint is one somebody is selling. Mr Okonedo asked me for a sign over his caravan door. He wanted one word and no more.

The word was Yahweh. He had written it on a scrap of card in a hand that leaned like a man walking into the wind. I told him I would do it in a copperplate with a looped Y, the kind I learned from your grandmother's recipe cards, the Y swinging down under the line like a rope off a trapeze. He said the name was too big to be dressed up as a trick, so I should keep the tails thin and let the paint breathe.
I worked the whole morning on it, the brush loaded with black enamel, letting each join run into the next. I drew the finish out to nothing, the way a good wire should taper before the drop. When I stood back, the sign looked less like lettering and more like something being hauled slowly up a rope, steady and sure.
He paid me in two packets of tea and a promise, and the lorry was gone before dusk. The caravan door hangs open now, and the letters catch the last of the sun, black on the sad white wood. Write back and tell me if you still keep the old sable brushes in the tin. Love, Dad.
