Khaleesi script tattoo on foot
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo spells the word Khaleesi in thin, joined black script that rises diagonally across the skin. A single fine swash line sweeps beneath the lettering and ends in a curl at the right. The ink is solid black on pale skin, shown against a light background in a close, straight-on photograph.

The horse came down the ramp at Dover at half five with her head high and her hooves ringing on the steel, and the lorry driver swore she had walked on like that at Ostend. I had a clipboard, a torch and eleven minutes before the next sailing. Her equine passport was a green little book with a Dutch stamp, and the name was written in the margin in a hand that leaned forward as if it were late for something: Khaleesi.

I asked the driver what it meant. He shrugged and said the girl who bought her had been reading some saga about dragons and queens, and the word had stuck to the grey mare the way burrs stick to wool. I told him the Dothraki would have a view on that, and he did not laugh. Mostly I was watching the way she set her feet on the concrete, as though she had spent her whole life deciding exactly where each one would land.
Her papers were in order. Everything was in order, which in my experience is the most suspicious condition a horse can be in. I ran the scanner along her neck and it chirped its small confirmation, I signed the form, and the driver let out a breath like a man who had been holding his lunch under his tongue for two hundred miles.
Then she stopped at the yellow line, turned her head towards the sea and gave one long, unimpressed snort, the kind a queen gives a petitioner who has taken too long to arrive. I stamped her book with the date and wrote in the box marked remarks that she was fit to travel and not, in my opinion, fit to be argued with. It was the only honest entry I made all shift.
