Fine line hummingbird on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A hummingbird in profile is drawn with a single continuous fine line in dark brown or black ink, with the beak pointing left and the wings sweeping upward. The tattoo sits on the inner forearm against pale skin, with a white fabric sleeve and dark denim visible in the background. The linework is thin and even, and the composition is simple with plenty of open skin around the design.

The hummingbird turned up at the allotment behind Ruddock Row the summer the lamp room flooded, and Mam said it had lost its way from somewhere warmer. I didn't argue. Nothing warm came up our valley that year except the kettle and the rumours.

Mr Pryce, the schoolmaster, had taught us that a proper line never lifts. A pencil lifted off the page was a confession, he said, and he made us draw the same snail forty times until our wrists ached. So on the back of the coal ledger, while Dad slept off the back shift in his chair, I tried the bird in one stroke. The beak first, sharp to the left. Then the long swoop of the wing, up and over and back down, and a second wing that ran out of paper before it ran out of nerve, so it crossed itself at the shoulder like a knot in a shoelace.
Dad woke with the ledger on his knee and didn't say anything for a long while. Then he took the pencil from behind my ear and ran his thumb along the crossing, pressing it darker, as if he meant to keep it.
On Thursday the cage dropped at six with the men in their lamps and their lunch tins, and the hummingbird was still on the fence rail by the headframe, its wings going so fast they looked like nothing at all. Mam said it was waiting for someone to come up. I drew it again that night, from the rail to the page, and this time I didn't lift the pencil once.
