Yellow crescent moon with grinning face on forearm
Traditional · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A yellow crescent moon with a cartoon-style grinning mouth filled with a grid of white teeth, and a black sun or eye motif with dotted rays on its upper face. The moon is outlined in black and shaded with orange and red around its edges, with a darker reddish-brown shadow on the inner curve. The tattoo sits on the forearm and fills most of the frame against a dark background.

The moon came up over the collier the same night the galley oven packed in, and by the time I'd swapped out the grill shelves I was ready to blame it on the moon. It hung over the port hatch, fat and yellow, grinning like a pantomime dame with a mouthful of white teeth that looked suspiciously like the oven racks. Okonjo, our bosun, swore it was a bad omen. Mrs Halloran, who had cooked on these waters for thirty years, said it was just the sun's bad-tempered cousin having a sulk.

In the morning I went up with the bread tin and found a black sun with dotted rays stuck on the moon's cheek, as if someone had pressed it there with a thumb. Okonjo said the sun was the moon's wife and she had run off to Bermuda with the second engineer. Halloran said that was rubbish, the sun had simply got tired of being looked at through the porthole. Nobody thought to ask the moon, which had gone pale and small by the time the watch changed, grinning all the same.
That night I left the oven door open a crack for the warmth, the way my gran used to for the cat. When I came back at four the grin on the hatch had lost a tooth on the left side, and a cold pan of scrambled eggs sat on the step, set in a neat yellow circle with a dot of pepper in the middle. I didn't tell Okonjo. He'd only have said the moon was hungry, and I'd have had to agree with him.
