Yellow sword on upper arm

Traditional · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A bold outlined sword runs vertically along the upper arm, with a yellow blade marked by thin dark engraved lines and a black crossguard above a red grip and pommel. The linework is thick and even, and the blade is filled with flat, solid yellow. The tattoo is centred on the arm against a plain skin background, with a dark sleeve visible at the left edge.

Dear Tom, I found your sword this morning when I went to lift the first of the parsnips. It was lying where the compost heap meets the fence, blade up, the way you'd leave it if you'd been fighting off the dragon that lives under the water butt. The paint has gone a bit chalky in the wet, but the yellow is still bright enough that the blackbird came down to inspect it before I could.

I haven't touched the grip. You'll want to see the red bit at the bottom, the one you wrapped in Mum's old hair ribbon, because it has faded to the colour of a robin's chest and I thought you'd want to know. The little scratches down the blade are still there too, the ones you made with a nail so it would look like it had been in a battle. I counted them. Eleven. Nobody I know has ever been in eleven battles, so I suspect you exaggerated.

I've put it in the shed on the hook beside the spade, not in the bin, which is what your grandad would have done. You can come and collect it when you're back from your mum's on Sunday. Bring the shield if you've still got it, and we'll see whether the courgettes need defending.

Love, Nan
