Hand gripping a knife on the chest

Fine line · Chest · Black and grey · Photo

A small outline tattoo shows a hand gripping the handle of a knife, with the blade angled up and to the left. The linework is a single even black line with no shading, and the fill is left as skin. The design sits in the middle of a chest with plain skin and light body hair around it.

By the fortieth day out from Valparaíso the biscuit was gone and the flour sacks were thin as paper, so Cook sent the boy aft for the bread knife. Wiremu Hale, sixteen and sick of peeling potatoes, came back with it gripped the wrong way, blade jutting up over his knuckles like a candle.

Thomas Arkwright, the carpenter, who had rounded the Horn three times and had the scars to prove it, took the knife off him without a word. He didn't snatch. He closed his big hand over the boy's small one, turned it until the handle sat in the hollow between thumb and forefinger, and held it there until the boy felt the weight settle.

Hold it like you mean to keep it, he said, and let go. The boy didn't understand until the cook started the loaves that afternoon. The blade went through the dough clean, and the next morning the bread came out of the oven with a crust that cracked like slate.

Years later, when the Marguerite had been broken up at Falmouth and Hale ran his own bakery on a street that smelled of yeast, he noticed his palm had worn a shallow groove into the wooden handle of his knife. He never told his apprentices where it came from. He simply handed them the knife and waited for their hands to find the hollow.
