Yin yang cats on a lower leg
Dotwork · Calf · Black and grey · Photo
A yin yang circle split into a stippled white half and a densely dotted black half, with a sleeping cat on each side. The cats are drawn in fine outline with dotwork shading that gives their fur texture and depth. The design is in black ink and greys, centred on pale skin against a plain light background.

The lamp at Scarrow Head had no keeper any more, only two cats who had agreed between them that the light would not go out. They had a rule for sleeping. At the turn of the stair, where the lamp threw its beam one way and the shadow of the tower fell the other, they curled up together, nose to tail, so that each kept the other's warmth and neither slept alone. The gulls complained about it. The tide took no notice.
One October night a fog came in thick as wool, and the smack Tern was still out past the Teeth with her crew of three. Pell heard her bell before anyone else could have. He woke Morwen with a flick of his tail and they went up the stairs together, taking it in turns to push and pull at the brass housing until the glass turned slow and the beam swung out over the water.
It was hours before the bell answered them from the bay. When the Tern's lantern finally came round the headland, small and yellow, Morwen was too tired to lift her head, so Pell lay across her flank and kept her warm. Morning found them back at the turn of the stair, tails touching, the sea below them shining in a pale ring where the light had been.
