Tabby cat portrait on the inner forearm

Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A tabby cat's face, shown head-on with pointed ears, striped forehead and whiskers, sits on the inner forearm of a person wearing a grey top. The cat is rendered in black ink and grey shading, with fine stippled texture in the fur and soft gradients around the eyes and nose. The tattoo is centred on the arm against a plain pale background, which keeps the focus on the design.

The tabby had belonged to the lighthouse on Sgeir Bheag for longer than anyone could agree on. When the last keeper, Ruth Halloran, locked the lamp room for the final time, the cat would not follow her down the rock stairs. She sat on the bottom step with her tail folded round her paws and stared up at the lantern as if it owed her an explanation.

The relief boat came on Thursday, and the skipper, a patient man called Callum Duff, tried coaxing with a sardine tin and then a boiled egg. Ruth watched from the landing with her arms crossed against the wind. "She's been waiting for the light to come back on," she said. "Forty years of it. She thinks she's still on duty." Callum laughed, but he left the tin open on the step anyway.

That night Ruth did not sleep. She lay in the cottage listening to the sea working at the skerries and thought about the fog horn, the logbook with its neat columns of passing ships, and the cat's round face turned always towards the water. At dawn she found the tabby still on the step, rain beaded on her whiskers, the sardines untouched.

So Ruth unlocked the lamp room, not for the light, which the mainland had switched off, but for the cat, who walked in ahead of her as if summoned. She settled beneath the dead lens with her eyes half closed, looking out across the grey water towards the land. Ruth sat down on the cold iron step beside her and did not mention Thursday. There was no need. The cat had already decided who would keep watch.
