Siamese cat face on a thigh

Dotwork · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A cat's face in profile-free front view, with pointed ears, large eyes and a small nose, is tattooed on the upper thigh. The shading is built from fine stippled dots and short hatched lines that give the fur a soft, textured look, with darker areas around the ears and muzzle. The tattoo is in black and grey ink and sits centred on plain skin against a dark clothing edge and a grey background.

Sit down, the lot of you, the soup's not going anywhere, and neither is my brother, though he keeps trying to leave by the back door. I'll tell you about Mrs Pirie's cat, because that animal is the reason any of us are standing in this barn today.

Tobias was a Siamese, grey at the muzzle and dark at the ears as if someone had dipped him in soot and thought better of it. He had a stare that could stop a clock. Mrs Pirie kept him on the sill of the cottage above the ferry slip, and from there he watched every row that happened on the lane below. When Davy Morrow and Callum Reid fell out over a boundary wall in nineteen fifty-eight, Tobias sat in the window and looked at them. He did not blink. He did not purr. He simply looked, and by the third hour both men had forgotten what the wall was for and were sitting on it together, sharing a flask.

The following spring Mrs Pirie died, and the ring she had left for Davy to give to the post office girl was found behind the stove. Everyone blamed the lodger. But when the house was cleared, Tobias was curled round the tin like a bolster, watching the door as if daring anyone to take it from him. Davy had been too frightened to ask, so the cat had quietly decided for him. Davy asked her that week, and she said yes, on one condition: that the cat came too.

So you see, it was never the wall or the ring. It was the look. Tobias never said a word, and he never once let anyone off lightly. Now lift your glasses to the couple, and mind the grey cat on the sill there, because he has been watching you since you came in.
