Black cat within an ink circle on a forearm
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A black cat sits in profile, looking down and to the left, with its tail curling around to form a broad open circle. The cat is rendered in soft, watercolour-like ink washes with grey gradients and loose, feathered edges, while the circle is a bold, tapering brush stroke. The tattoo is centred on a pale forearm against a blurred dark brick background.

The ink-grinder's daughter had sold the last of the soot cakes by the time the cat came down from the roof of the granary and sat on the good flagstone, the one where the sun lay longest. It was black from ear to tail, the colour of wet inkstick, and it did not look at her. It looked at the bowl of water beside her brushes, where the morning lay flat and grey.

Her father said a painter who could not draw a circle in one breath would never be trusted with a seal. So every evening she had practised until her wrist ached. Her rings came out lumpy, or closed too early, or left a gap like a door somebody forgot to shut. The cat watched each failure with the same patience it gave to mice. When at last she dipped the brush, drew the stroke out from the stone and let it swing round, tapering where her hand lifted, the cat rose and stepped onto the wet line as though it had been waiting for a path.
"Not there," she said. "That is my edge." The cat turned its head slowly toward the lamp that had gone out in the night, then curled its tail around the ring and lay down so the tail met its own nose. The gap she had dreaded was gone. Her father came out to the yard, saw the circle drying on the stone with a black animal folded inside it, and said nothing for a long while.
Years later, when the granary burned, the stone was the only thing left unbroken, and the ring was still there in the ash, with the cat sitting inside it as if it had decided where it belonged.
