Yin yang pugs on the upper arm
Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
Two pugs curl around each other inside a circle, one solid black and one white with black outlines, forming a yin yang shape. The pug faces and curled bodies are drawn with clean, thin outlines and simple solid black fills, with a few dotted marks on the white pug. The tattoo sits on pale skin against a plain background, shown in a close, centred composition.

By the third week of snow at Greyhollow Inn, the two pugs had settled between them who slept where by the hearth. The black one, Tansy, took the flagstones nearest the fire and gave the pale one, Mab, the draught from the door. Neither complained. The arrangement had been agreed by curling tight together and turning like a wheel until the circle closed.

Tom Pell, the ostler, had come in off the moor with two frostbitten fingers and no coin, and the landlady, Hester Vane, had put him by the kitchen range without asking his business. He watched the dogs most evenings. "Like a pair of half-moons that can't decide," he said once. Hester told him they were not half of anything. They were whole, and a dog who gave up his warm place for a friend was simply a dog with manners.
The thaw came on St Agnes morning. The road men came up the valley with shovels and a cart of salt, and Tom went down with them, meaning to return for his wages in spring. He left his knife on the mantel and a promise to mend the gate.
He came back in April with the wages in a cloth bag. The gate still hung crooked, and the dogs were curled on the flags as they always had been, one dark, one pale, the hearth warm at their backs. Mab had the fire side now and Tansy the draught. Hester said they had simply traded, as neighbours do when one has been cold too long.
