Other · Mixed · Photo

A seated pug with a simple black outline, filled black eyes and nose, and a curled tail faces forward. Two small solid red hearts sit to its right, and the rest of the body is left unshaded skin. The composition is centred on the pug with plenty of plain skin around it, and a hand and ring appear at the top right.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The keeper's pug, Mabon, climbed the lighthouse stairs every evening at six and sat on the top step facing the harbour road. Nobody had told him that Tomas Greer had gone down to the boats one October and not come back up the hill. Nell told him once, in the kitchen, and the dog looked at her with those black, patient eyes and went on watching the road anyway.

The light had to be kept burning whatever the weather, so Nell trimmed the wick each night and Mabon followed her up the iron stairs, one wheezing step at a time. He lay beside the lamp while she worked. In the winter of the great fog the bells of the coasting boats rang out blind in the murk, and the village said there was nothing to be done but pray and keep the oil topped up. Nell said the dog was only fat and slow on the stairs, and she did not mention that he never once came down before dawn.

On the ninth night a boy came up the hill with a lantern. He was Tomas's nephew, sent from the mainland to fetch the old boat home, and he had lost his way in the fog on the cove path. He reached the tower gasping and found the pug waiting at the door, tail curled tight, as if he had been expecting someone. The dog did not go to the lamp. He went down the path at a waddling run, stopping at each bend to look back, until the boy saw the shingle and the stern of a boat with a lantern hung from its rail.

At first light the boat came in under the fog with its oars knocking, and the pug sat on the top step again with his tail curled round his feet, as though he had only ever been counting the boats in.
