Colour fine line tattoo of three cats seated within a wreath of coral flowers and dark leaves, on the inner upper arm.

Three cats in a floral wreath

Fine line · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo

The design shows three cats side by side: a fluffy orange cat on the left, a black and white cat with green eyes in the centre, and a grey tabby on the right. They sit inside an oval wreath of coral flowers and dark leafy stems. The linework is fine and the fur is softly shaded with watercolour-like washes against the pale skin.

Mrs Pell had left the postern gate open again, and by the time Ginger came down the stone stairs of Harrowmere Keep the rain had found every crack in the flagstones. Three cats had claimed the ruin the winter the last lord died: Ginger, who considered herself the castle's steward; Bramble, the tuxedo with the green eyes, who considered himself its poet; and Tab, the grey tabby, who considered nothing at all unless it was warm.

The trouble was the wreath. Every spring the brambles climbed the chapel windows and bloomed coral, and the village children carried the petals up to the battlements and laid them in a ring around the old well. Ginger hated the flowers. Bramble adored them and wrote odes on the back of the parish notices. Tab slept in them.

On the evening the bailiff came up the hill with his ledger, Ginger climbed onto the broken parapet and sat with her tail wrapped round her paws, fur puffed to twice its size, looking down at him as though he were a mouse who had made a serious mistake. He read out the sale notice in a thin voice. Bramble began to recite. Tab yawned enormously and rolled over in the petals.

The bailiff left before dawn, having counted three cats, one roof that would not survive another winter, and a great deal of rain. Ginger watched him go from the gatehouse. Bramble found her there with his poem finally finished and read it aloud, badly, while the wind dragged the coral petals across the courtyard. Ginger did not say that she had been practising the same stare all night. She settled into the flowers beside Tab and let the water run off her ears, as if the castle had only ever been waiting for the three of them to arrive.
